What is Mental Health? A Guide for Newcomers to Alberta

Admin User May 26, 2026
Mental health is about how we think, feel, and act. It affects how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. For newcomers to Alberta, understanding mental health in the Canadian context is an important step toward building a healthy life in your new home. In many of our communities, mental health is not talked about openly. There may be stigma, fear, or simply a different way of understanding emotional wellbeing. At Swyft Cares Foundation, we believe that mental health is just as important as physical health — and that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness. As a newcomer, you may experience culture shock, loneliness, grief over leaving your home country, stress about employment, or difficulty navigating a new healthcare system. All of these are normal reactions to a major life change. Swyft Cares Foundation is here to help. All our services are free, confidential, and available in English, French, Yoruba, Twi, Amharic, Somali, and Arabic.
